Add Amazon Alexa to your Netgear Orbi Voice RBS40V using the NETGEAR Orbi app

Time is evolving and so do the Routers! Now you can add Amazon Alexa Voice Assistant to interact on your behalf with your Orbi Voice RBS40V and operate it by using voice commands. This amazing virtual assistant “Amazon’s Alexa” will give you another luxurious feeling while operating your Netgear Orbi. With voice commands, you can use Alexa for a number of tasks such as setting reminders, playing music, accessing particular stations for video streaming, checking the weather, etc.

To add this virtual assistant “Amazon Alexa” to your Orbi Voice RBS40V, you must have an Amazon account. In this article, we are going to share a few easy troubleshooting steps to install/ add Alexa with your Netgear Orbi Voice RBS40V. In case you have already installed it and missed adding Alexa during the installation process or not prompted to add amazon credentials while installation of your Netgear Orbi Voice, you’re at the right place buddy!

First off we will tell you to set up your Orbi Voice RBS40V in Extender Mode:

  1. Ensure that your Orbi Voice RBS40V is placed near your router.

Note: You can change the position of your Orbi Voice RBS40V once the setup process is complete.

  1. Take the plug of your Orbi Voice and connect it to a power source. In case the Orbi Voice is already turned ON, you need to turn it OFF. Then press the sync button and keep holding it for a few seconds meanwhile press and release the Power button to turn ON the device.
  2. Wait until the ring LED turns white and light blue.
  3. Time to release the Sync button. The ring LED will turn from light blue to solid light blue in a few seconds.  This shows that your Orbi Voice RBS40V satellite is in extender mode and ready for setup.
  4. These LED lights are important indicators so make sure you wait until they turn to their actual color as advised in this article. 
  5. Now you need to connect your client device to the new NETGEAR_EXT SSID.
  6. Once it is connected to the NETGEAR_EXT network.  Open up any web browser and type http://www.mywifiext.net in the URL/ address bar
  7. It will be prompted to update the firmware in case there is a new firmware update available. 

Note: To get the latest FW for Orbi Voice go to https://www.netgear.com/support/product/RBS40V.aspx#download. From here you can easily download the latest firmware version of the Extender mode for any of your Orbi devices.

  1. Let’s suppose that a new firmware was available and it has been downloaded. Now you need to click the “Browse” button and locate the downloaded firmware file, give permission to start the firmware update. 
  2. Once this process of the firmware update is finished, you need to reboot your device.
  3. Let’s get back to the Orbi Voice RBS40V setup, download the Nighthawk App on your smartphone either from Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Also, you can see https://www.netgear.com/home/apps-services/nighthawk-app/  for more info towards downloading the Nighthawk App.
  4. Once you have downloaded the Nighthawk App and successfully installed it, you need to join the NETGEAR_EXT network from your smartphone on which the Nighthawk app is downloaded. 
  5. To complete the rest of the setup, the Nighthawk app will give you instructions that you need to follow.

Let’s get to the troubleshooting with an accessible Amazon Alexa account. Now that the Orbi Voice RBS40V setup is complete, you can change the placement of your Orbi Voice as per your convenience and follow the below steps.

Steps to add Alexa with Netgear Orbi Voice RBS40V:

  1. Open the NETGEAR Orbi app on your smartphone.
  2. On the dashboard, click Voice Controls.
  3. Click DETAILS > Amazon Account
  4. Click Log in With Amazon.

Use Netgear Orbi Voice RBS40V with NETGEAR Orbi App For Android & Apple 

Orbi Mode lets you connect your Orbi Voice RBS40V to your Orbi router. In case you don’t have an Orbi router, you can opt to set up your Orbi Voice in an Extender Mode. For more information, you can get in touch with our support team via the live chat option. 

Setup Orbi Voice RBS40V with Netgear Orbi App in Android and iPhone:

  1. Open Playstore in android/ App store in IOS or visit Orbi-app.com on your android phone.
  2. Download the NETGEAR Orbi app on your smartphone.
  3. Ensure that your Orbi Voice RBS40V is placed near your router.

Note: You can change the position of your Orbi Voice RBS40V once the setup process is complete.

  1. Take the plug of your Orbi Voice and connect it to a power source. In case the Orbi Voice is already turned ON, you need to turn it OFF. Then press the sync button and keep holding it for a few seconds meanwhile press and release the Power button to turn ON the device.
  2. Wait until the ring LED turns white and light blue.
  3. Time to release the Sync button. The ring LED will turn from light blue to solid light blue in a few seconds.  This shows that your Orbi Voice RBS40V satellite is in extender mode and ready for setup.
  4. Observe the Lights carefully as they indicate the correct working of your Orbi Voice:
  • Pulsing white: You’ll see the LED turn to white for a couple of minutes as your Orbi Voice is changing to Orbi Mode. 
  • Solid white: It’ll turn to constant Solid white as your Orbi Voice is now  in Orbi Mode and can be synced with your Orbi router
  1. Open the NETGEAR Orbi app that you downloaded.
  2. On the Dashboard, click the Home icon.
  3. Click ADD SATELLITE.
  4. The app will give you instructions to sync your Orbi Voice RBS40V with your Orbi router and during this process, it’ll prompt you to add Amazon Alexa. 
  5. Observe the LED indicators carefully when your Orbi Voice is syncing with your Orbi router, you’ll see following colors:
    • White: It means that your Orbi Voice is trying to connect to your Orbi router.
    • Blue, amber, or magenta: This is indicating the status of the connection between Orbi Voice and the Orbi router:
      • Blue: Connection is Good and stable.
      • Amber: Connection is Fair. Try to place your Orbi Voice closer to the Orbi router. You’ll see the LED will turn Amber for 3 minutes and then it will turn OFF.
      • Magenta: Failed Connection. That means your Orbi Voice is farther from the Orbi router, move it closer and try again.
      • Off (no color): Not Connected. Your Orbi Voice is not connected to the Orbi router.  
  1. Once the setup is complete, you can position your Orbi Voice to the location you prefer
